Why we call our country “motherland”?

In all articles, we call our country mother, why using mother, no son?
Mother breed us, is it the reason?
We can always get courage and love from mother in our lives, but what have we done for mother?
I have give my son lots of loves with no reason, breed and teach him with patience, just because he is my son.
I think I cann’t love my country as loving my son with selflessness. Can you?
